Canary Islands and Madeira Winter Warmth

January 2027 | 14 Nights | Southampton | Balmoral | L2701

ABOUT THIS CRUISE

Swap the cold, grey days at home for the warmth of the Canaries – the perfect tonic after the festive rush. Sailing between sun-kissed islands, you’ll find time to slow down and truly unwind, whether ashore or out on deck. Sink your toes into Tenerife’s soft sands, stroll the sweeping golden dunes of Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas Beach, and breathe in the fresh sea air along La Palma’s scenic coastal paths.

There’s also the chance to sail by catamaran off Tenerife’s sparkling coast, keeping watch for playful dolphins as they arc through the waves. Then there’s Madeira, with its sub-tropical climate, fragrant botanical gardens and welcoming café terraces made for lingering and people-watching, perhaps with a glass of the island’s fortified wine in hand.

Fran & Graham Foster

Host

Fran and Graham live in the New Forest and are both active members of their local bridge club, being qualified directors and teachers. Fran learnt to play as a teenager when her parents, Ken and Sheila Barker started bridge lessons. She then played infrequently while studying to be a physiotherapist but started lessons again after having her first child. Fran subsequently played once a week when able, until her children grew up, and with more time available, she has played much more, taking part in local and county events. She has also played in the Lady Milne trials. Currently Fran runs the Education Programme at the local club, running both year one and year two lessons, as well as helping on Bernard Magee Bridge events. Despite appearances to the contrary, Graham has been an avid bridge player for over 40 years!! Graham has extensive bridge experience at a high level, a county A team player for over 30 years with a number of significant successes in National and European competitions over that period. Graham is particularly enthusiastic in helping others to improve and, especially, to help people really enjoy their bridge and has provided free tutorials and workshops at his several bridge clubs for over 20 years. For the last few years, Graham has been delighted to work with and support BMB in its ambition to promote and extend the widest possible enjoyment of bridge.

Arrival – Early Morning  →  Departure – Late Evening

Las Palmas is perhaps the most popular destination in the Canary Islands, loved by those who enjoy year-round sunshine. The island was originally occupied by the Canarii people, from the 5th century BC, whose cultures and lifestyles can be discovered at several sites around Gran Canaria, including the ancient burial ground of El Maipés Necropolis. The twin towers of Santa Ana Cathedral stand tall in the centre of Las Palmas, a unique combination of Renaissance, Gothic and Neoclassical styles.

Santa Cruz de La Palma

Canary Islands

Arrival – Early Morning  →  Departure – Early Afternoon

The landscapes of La Palma were formed around 2 million years ago, resulting in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park being formed by erosion from the volcano’s original crater, and now classed as a Biosphere Reserve. At sea level, the island’s capital, Santa Cruz, is a small city with colonial style architecture and edged with volcanic black sandy beaches. The historic quarter of the city is steeped in history with buildings erected during the reign of Phillip II, and is widely regarded as one of Spain’s Historic-Artistic sites.
